Monday, October 08, 2007 – Plattsburgh, New York.

Day 186: Today is Thanksgiving Day in Canada. Most of the traffic across the border should be coming north. I don’t hear the alarm this morning. We wake up at 5:50. We must have really needed the sleep. We take our final leave and put our bags in the car. Bob is navigating us out of the city. Our first stop is a Starbucks on Notre Dame. Then we cross the Jacques Cartier Bridge and go on to our start for today. Bob starts walking at 8:00. It is still raining mistily, but it is full daylight. Bob walks and I move ahead just a little at a time.

We run into a couple of curious local residents. Each time I give them our card and they are very interested in Bob’s walk. Bob gets a call from a radio station in Montreal and does a 10 minute on-air interview. We keep going until lunch at almost 30 km. Today may be a long walk. We will have to keep going until we reach the border and cross it. We see a lot of old, very old, stone houses in this area of southern Quebec.

I drive ahead to the point where Hwy 217 intersects the border. There is a gate and a sign directing border crossers to the crossing on Hwy 15/Interstate 87. I call Bob and tell him, then I drive on a crossover road to the border crossing. Bob cannot walk on the interstate, but I find a way up a service road to the Canadian border office and there is an access from there to the US crossing. Bob walks up the crossroad and the service road. Then we move together, me driving and Bob walking towards an open US kiosk. Bob goes first with his passport in his hands and explains what he is doing. They wave me forward and process us both together. We cross into the US at about 4:35. The customs agents are very interested in Bob’s journey. After taking a card for the website, they wish us well and give us directions to the first exit so we can get off the interstate.

We move to the exit and I park the car. Bob has walked a total of 48 km today. He climbs wearily into the car at 4:59 pm just outside Champlain, NY. It has just started to rain mistily. We take Hwy 9 to Plattsburgh and our billet for tonight. We are very grateful to see the Econo Lodge sign. a86-oct-8-10-plattsburgh-ny-econo-lodge-scott.jpgWhen we check in, we discover we have been given a 2 room suite with a kitchen area. We move in most of our things, and then go out to get some dinner. Back at the motel, we curl up to watch some TV and Bob falls immediately asleep. I turn out the lights and go to bed as well. The end of Canadian Thanksgiving, and the start of the U.S leg of the walk. We sleep.
